Gregg Caudell: Steward of the Land
September 12-November 2, 2025
Artist reception: October 29, 5-8 pm, MAC After Hours
Gregg Caudell’s love of nature and painting have been intertwined for decades. Living and working on his ranch along the Sanpoil River on the Colville Reservation, he paints what he knows—draft horses, bees, salmon, and the forests and farmland that have shaped his life.
Born in 1953 in Great Falls, Montana, Gregg was encouraged early on by his grandmother, a country schoolteacher in the Highwoods of Choteau County, to draw and paint. That creative spark grew into a lifelong practice rooted in the rhythms of rural life and a deep connection to the land.
When he’s not painting, Gregg is tending bees, farming with horses, or fishing. His family works alongside the Colville Tribe to restore native fish populations to the Sanpoil River watershed—work that reflects his broader belief in stewardship and reverence for the natural world.
Gregg’s paintings reflect the legacy of plein-air and Impressionist traditions, with nods to the pointillism of Seurat. His work honors the natural heritage of the Inland Northwest and the people who care for it—each piece a meditation on light, substance, and a life lived close to the land.
