An Eye for Detail: European Paintings 1500-1900

Drawn from a local private collection, this exhibition brings together remarkable paintings, including portraits and lively scenes of everyday life by well-known artists such as Lucas Cranach, Hans Baldung Grien, Jan Steen, and Thomas Gainsborough.

An Eye for Detail: European Paintings, 1500-1900 was curated by Dr. Meredith Shimizu, Professor of Art History at Whitworth University, assisted by Whitworth University interns: Sophia Anderson, Maura Carrillo, Carissa Cary, and Courtney Mankiller.

America at 250: 25 Decades of Collected Memories

Starting with the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, the United States have been conducting the great “American experiment” for the last 250 years. For 25 decades, people have kept and collected objects that were important to them for a variety of reasons. By looking back at what materials were collected by the museum since its founding, we catch a glimpse of the ways that our community have been impacted by and left their mark on American history.

Local MOC (My Own Creation) builders bring seven iconic Spokane landmarks to life with to-scale replicas, each paired with rich historical insights from the Joel E. Ferris Archives. Visitors of all ages can build and play in the gallery’s hands-on play space.

James Lavadour: Land of Origin presents the most comprehensive survey to date of works by painter and printmaker James Lavadour (Walla Walla). Spanning five decades, this retrospective celebrates Lavadour's deep connection to the eastern Oregon landscape he calls home.

Emma Noyes: Continuing the Conversation

Continuing the Conversation, a mural by Emma Noyes, features Mole Woman. Noyes depicts this powerful being in conversation with the nearby mural by artist Ric Gendron, set on an improvised tule-mat coffee table on the land outside a Nespelem encampment.
